LC - Irish Art - Christian Metalwork Techniques

This week LC students have been busy working in four groups, to create posters that record the finer details of four metal pieces from the Christian Period. Each group were assigned illustrators, typographers, researchers and typists! Each group has to point out the main sections of the artifacts and identify the metalworking techniques involved.

3D Ideas using Mod Roc - Making A Figure

Junior Certs have the art room covered in dust, clay, wire, paper mache, newspapers and what ever other materials they can lay their hands on to create the final 3D stage of their projects! Many students are using Mod Roc to create their 3D forms. In this video link from Specialist Crafts it show you how to make a simple Mod Roc figure from a wire armature. This project is perfect for illustrating how armatures work, but also allows you to create human forms in various positions to use as models to sketch from.

5th Yr - Anti Litter Short Film Awards Ceremony!

5th Year Art students had a fantastic afternoon in the Roscommon Arts Centre on Wednesday 21st March, for the Awards ceremony and screening of their Anti Litter Short film, entitled 'The Litter, The Witch and the Wardrobe’. This is third year Roscommon County Council in association with the New Media Institute has ran this competition for secondary schools in the area and is a really worthwhile projects for all participants involved. The 5th Year class spent several weeks creating storyboards, scripts, props and costumes, using a variety of different recycled materials, inspired by the characters of the famous fantasy novel by CS Lewis. Congratulations to all the students for their hard works, and a special thank you to Lauran O Sullivan who presented an introduction to the film on the day, on behalf of the class. 2nd Year Project - My Local Environment

My Local Environment.
This project will be an investigation into the streets, buildings, architecture and landscape of your local environment. Students must gather interesting images and information from various different sources. For example around the school, your home, your street. To gather this information students may use:

  • Google Street View
  • Photographs
  • Videos
  • Observational Drawings
1. First task is to create a Mind Map of visual images of your ideas for the project. Mind Maps are all the visual images and words you can think of that are associated with your theme or subject matter. Here are some good examples to give you ideas. (click on the images to view larger size)






2. Research and Discuss the following Artists

Vincent Van Gogh  


Jack B Yeats
3. Create A5 pieces of art works, using a variety of different mediums
4. Students will develop several drawings into a final design for a:

  • Pastel Drawing  
  • Stamp design
  • Lino Print    
  • Etching

Dublin City Gallery, Huge Lane

On Thursday the 1st of December, Ms Kelly's Leaving Cert Art students had an early start to make the trip to Dublin to visit the annual NCAD (National College of Art and Design) Open Day. Students went to talks and presentations and were allowed to walk through the First Year Core Studies studio, gaining first-hand experience of what a studio environment is like, seeing work by Ceramic, Fashion Design, Visual Communication, and Fine Art studentsIn the afternoon the group travelled across town to the Huge Lane, Dublin City Gallery. Students saw a wide range of modern and contemporary art, which was of great benefit for their Art History and Appreciation studies.

Located in Dublin's city centre, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, originally called The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, houses one of Ireland's foremost collections of modern and contemporary art. This years Leaving Certs were extremely lucky to have seen the rare exhibition of  The Art Books of Henri Matisse in the Chester Beatty Library, in Dublin Castle, last May. Described by the Lonely Planet as not just the best museum in Ireland, but one of the best in Europe, the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin is an art museum and library which houses the great collection of manuscripts, miniature paintings, prints, drawings, rare books and some decorative arts assembled bySir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968).

5th Yr - The Litter, The Witch and the Wardrobe!

The premiere of this years Anti Litter Short Film Competition in association with Roscommon County Council
and the New Media Institute, Kildare will be held in the Roscommon Art Centre on the 21st March 2012. 5th Year students filmed their twist on the 'Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe', back in December, after spending several weeks creating storyboards, scripts, props and costumes. Best of luck to all the students and congratulations on all their hard work!
