Junior Cert Art Project of the Year 2012

Congratulations to Jennifer Leyden on achieving Junior Cert Art Project of the Year. Jenny's project was unanimously voted first place by her classmates and Ms Kelly. As part of the prize Jenny receives a full blog post, dedicated to her entire project.

Looking at nature : By Jennifer Leyden
I chose the theme 'Looking at nature' to base my Junior Cert art project on, as I was able to incorporate horses under this title. I found the tasks of the project daunting at first, but after work had begun on the different sheets, I began to look forward to each art class. For my 3D part of the art project, I veered completely away from horses and more so towards insects and bees. Ms. Kelly helped me develop my design ideas and structure the final display, consisting of three black and yellow bees surrounding a white beehive. I enjoyed learning how different materials such as clay, wire and cardboard, could be used to create realistic art forms and sculptures, in addition to paint and colour.

Roscommon Schools Sculpture Competition

'Feeling Sheepish'

LCA 1 Visual Art students entered their sheep sculptures into The Roscommon Schools Sculpture Competition. This is a very exciting event that takes place throughout the Summer in Strokestown Park, schools from all over County Roscommon have been invited to take part, by creating a piece of sculpture that reflects or is inspired by Strokestown Park. Be it the architecture or collections within the House, or the tragic story of The Irish National Famine Museum or the tranquillity of the walled Gardens & Estate that is up to the Students. Each piece of sculpture is placed along the Woodland walk. All visitors to the woodlands can vote for their favourite piece, with kind sponsorship from Investec Bank, the winning school will receive €3500.
The LCA sculpture pieces, entitled 'Feeling Sheepish' are on display at the start of the Woodland Walk
So if you are visiting Strokestown park during the summer months, don't forget to vote!

Students created the sheep using fencing wire, covered with hundreds of pom poms made from recycled plastic bags, plaster of paris, paint and varnish. Well done to all the students involved for their hard work.
